While residents once called it Utopia, the early economy of Oakbrook Terrace was rooted in agriculture until suburban growth after World War II. Soon, commercial centers developed along Roosevelt Road and 22nd Street, the two major east-west arteries. This easy access led to the city’s population increasing in the 1970s and new commercial areas were developed in the 1980s.
During the 1980s, DuPage County’s tallest office building, Oakbrook Terrace Tower was completed. Drury Lane, Redbox, the Chicago Automobile Trade Association and ComEd all now call Oakbrook Terrace their home.
Oakbrook Terrace has worked diligently to enhance its beautiful Butterfield corridor, implementing a plan designed to expand the community’s access and visibility even more. Oakbrook Terrace’s community development initiatives will ensure the city’s continued economic growth over the next twenty years.
